Professional vs Ready to Wear Hair Extensions: Which Is Right for You?

Most women arrive at extensions with a picture in their head of how the hair should look, and no picture at all of how it should be attached. Which is fair enough. The method is the unglamorous part, right up until it becomes the part that decides whether you love wearing them.

Our range splits into two routes, and the split is deliberate. Professional extensions are fitted by a stylist and stay in. Ready to Wear extensions go in and come out yourself, whenever you like.

Both use human hair. Both are heat-friendly. They ask completely different things of you.

The short answer

If you want to wake up with the hair already there, every day, and you are happy to see a stylist to have it fitted, Professional.

If you want length and volume some of the time, and you want to be in control of when, Ready to Wear.

Everything below is the detail behind that.

Ready to Wear: how it works

Ready to Wear pieces come fitted with clips or a clip base. You section your own hair, secure them, and you are done. They come out at the end of the day.

Fitting takes most people a few minutes once they have done it a handful of times. The first attempt takes longer, because sectioning is the part that needs practice rather than the clipping itself.

There are four pieces in the range, and they do different jobs.

Luxe Volume Clip In is the full transformation: a complete set weighing between 170g and 220g, available in 20", 22" and 24", and carrying the widest shade range we offer, from Jet Black through to Snow White and the blended melts. This is the one for genuine length and thickness.

Luxe Skinny Clips are the lighter option, in the same three lengths. If your hair is finer, or you want length without the weight of a full volume set, start here.

Luxe Volume Clip In Curly brings texture rather than a straight finish, in 20".

Ponytails are their own category, and they are the quickest thing in the range. The Zahra Ponytail comes in 20" and 24". The Iman Flat Clip Ponytail uses a slim, flat clip base that sits close to the head without bulk, secured with a wrap, in 20". Both take seconds.

Ready to Wear tends to suit you if:

  • You want the option rather than the commitment
  • You want extensions for occasions, work days or nights out rather than continuously
  • You would rather not build salon appointments into the process
  • You are new to extensions and want to try before committing to anything longer term
  • You want to change your look between one day and the next

The trade-off: it is a task, however small, and it is a daily one if you wear them daily. If adding a step to your morning is the thing standing between you and wearing them at all, be honest with yourself about that.

Professional: how it works

Professional extensions are attached to your own hair by a stylist and stay in place between appointments. There is no daily fitting, because there is no daily anything. You wash, style and sleep as though the hair were your own.

The range covers four attachment methods across two tiers, Luxe and Luxe Prestige.

Bonds attach in individual strands, which makes them the most flexible for placement and the most natural through a parting. Luxe Remy Nano Bonds use ultra-small silicone-tipped rings with no glue involved, 50 pieces to a 50g pack, in 20" and 24". Luxe Remy Keratin Bonds are the bonded alternative, also in 20" and 24", with a Luxe Prestige version in 24".

Tapes attach in wide, flat tabs rather than individual strands, which makes fitting faster and the finish very flat against the head. Luxe Prestige Slim Tape In uses a thin, flexible strip, 20 pre-tipped pieces per 50g pack, in 24", and carries the widest range of balayage and blended shades in the collection. Luxe Prestige Easy Tape In is available in 20".

Wefts attach as a continuous strip, sewn or beaded onto a braided base. Luxe Genius Weft is an ultra-thin, flexible weft that can be cut to width without shedding, 50g per pack in 24", designed for professional sewing or bead installation. Because the weight spreads across a line rather than concentrating in points, it is a comfortable option for a full head.

Professional tends to suit you if:

  • You want continuous length and volume without thinking about it
  • You are happy to build in salon appointments for fitting and maintenance
  • You want the flattest, most seamless result available
  • You want a method that holds up through an active week without adjustment

The trade-off: commitment, and the need for a good stylist. Fitting and maintenance are skilled work, and the quality of the fitting matters as much as the quality of the hair.

Time, honestly compared

People compare these two on cost and forget to compare them on time, which is usually what actually decides it.

Ready to Wear costs you minutes daily and nothing at a salon. Over a month of near-daily wear those minutes add up. Over a month of occasional wear they add up to almost nothing.

Professional costs you an appointment at fitting, maintenance appointments at the intervals your stylist recommends, and one at removal. Between those points it costs you nothing at all.

Wearing extensions two or three times a week, Ready to Wear wins on time comfortably. Wearing them every single day, the maths flips.

What each route asks of your own hair

This is the section that matters most and gets discussed least.

Ready to Wear puts pressure at the specific points where the clips sit. Rotate placement slightly between wears, avoid clipping to the same exact roots every day, and take them out at night. Done that way, they are gentle, and the fact that they come out at all is their real advantage.

Professional holds weight continuously rather than in bursts. Different methods distribute that weight differently: bonds spread it across many small points, tapes across flat tabs, wefts along a line. All of them rely on being fitted at the right tension and maintained on schedule. Speak up during fitting if anything feels tight rather than firm. Firm is correct. Tight is not.

Either way, your own hair still needs washing, conditioning and attention underneath. Extensions do not pause the maintenance of the hair they are attached to.

Luxe and Luxe Prestige

Both tiers appear across the Professional range, and the choice between them is about the hair itself rather than the method. Your stylist is the right person to advise on which suits your hair and the look you are after, particularly if you are working with balayage or blended tones, where the Prestige shade range is broader.

Can you do both?

Yes, and plenty of people do.

A common approach is Professional for a stretch of the year when the daily routine is already full, and Ready to Wear the rest of the time. It is not either-or forever. It is a choice you get to make again.

If you go this route, matching your shade across both is worth thinking about upfront. Our guide to matching hair extensions to your hair colour covers how to keep that consistent.

Choosing: three questions

How often will you genuinely wear them? A few times a week or less, Ready to Wear. Daily, consider Professional.

How do you feel about salon appointments? Happy to book them in, Professional is open to you. Would rather not, Ready to Wear.

Do you want to be able to change your mind? Ready to Wear comes out whenever you like. Professional is a commitment for the length of the fitting.

If two of your three answers point the same way, you have your answer.

FAQ

Are clip-in extensions damaging?

Worn sensibly they are among the gentler options, because they come out every night and the hair gets a break. The things to avoid are clipping to the exact same roots daily, sleeping in them, and pulling rather than releasing the clips when removing.

What is the difference between nano bonds and keratin bonds?

Both attach in individual strands. Nano bonds use small silicone-tipped rings with no glue involved. Keratin bonds use a bonded attachment. Your stylist will advise on which suits your hair type and density better.

Which method is best for fine hair?

Skinny Clips are the more forgiving starting point within Ready to Wear, being lighter than a full volume set. Within Professional, methods that distribute weight across many small points or a continuous line are generally kinder than concentrated weight, but fine hair covers a wide range, and a stylist assessing your hair in person will give a better answer than any article can.

Do I need a stylist for Professional extensions?

Yes. Bonds, tapes and wefts all need correct placement and tension, and both are much harder to judge on your own head than they look.

Can I wash my hair with clip-ins in?

Take them out first. Washing your own hair with clip-ins fitted makes both harder to dry properly and puts unnecessary weight on wet roots. Our extension care guide covers how to wash them separately.

What lengths are available?

Across the range, 20", 22" and 24" depending on the product. Volume Clips and Skinny Clips offer all three. Most Professional options come in 20" or 24".
